Whether you’ve never owned a gun or are an expert marksman, MR. K Guns in Plattsmouth may just have the right firearm for you.
With the help of his father Russ Kathol, MR. K Guns owner Max Kathol acquired a Federal Fire Arms License in Oct. 2011. Two months later he opened a gun shop for retail sales in Suite B in his parents’ shop, Main Street Jewelers, 417 Main Street, Plattsmouth.
Adding the gun shop entailed some changes at the jewelry shop, Russ said. “The hardest thing was security. We really had to beef it up,” Russ said.
Although security and inventory for the shop was added to the well-established jewelry gift store, Max assured Main Street Jewelers and MR. K Gun patrons that all gun sales are private. “Jewelry customers do not see any guns in the store,” Max said.
Although it took time, the gun shop has a substantial inventory for customers to choose from including many self-protection fire arms, sporting rifles, shotguns and collector pieces.
“Although we are not a museum, we do have some of the most unusual firearms made.” Max said.
“We have the largest and the smallest shotgun in the county,” Russ added.
In less than a year, Max said the type of guns people want has changed. “When we first opened, we focused on gun transfers and custom ordering. We concentrated on sportsmanship and hunting,” he said. “With what has been going on in the country, the demand for firearms for home security and self-defense is exceeding that for sportsmanship. As a whole, guns sales have changed from customers wanting an exact type of gun to, ‘Is there anything you can get me?’”
While policy makers passing more gun control measures across the nation, citizens have increased their demand for firearms. So much so in the month of January 2013, MR K. Guns sold 700 percent more firearms than in the 12 months of 2012.
“The national average in December was over 50 percent,” Russ added.
Russ and Max also buy firearms from estates and even travel to locations. “We appraise and, in most cases, give above assessed market values,” Russ said. In many cases, people don’t realize how valuable some firearms are to some collectors.”
Russ and Max are open to people trading well-maintained collective firearms for a self protection weapon.
Because above all, customer services is key’s to both MR. K Guns and Main Street Jewelers.
“It’s a unique experience for the average customer coming into this shop who has a lot of experience to people buying their first gun,” Max explained.
With each purchase, Max carefully explains the firearm’s function of operations as well as all the ‘do’s and don’ts’ to using it. “I make a purchasing experience, a learning experience,” he said.
MR. K Guns also offers Concealed Carry Weapon classes taught by Nebraska State Patrol certified instructors. The next CCW class is March 9.
Max reminds customers that if they purchase a rifle or gun, they are subject to a background check. “National Instant Criminal background checks are done on all of our transactions,” he said. “When purchasing a pistol, the buyer must go to the sheriff’s office for a pistol permit/firearms certificate.”
MR. K Guns is also very supportive of law enforcement. “We offer law enforcement officers weapons at cost for duty-use firearms,” Max said. “We also help sponsor not-for-profit organizations. In 2012, we provided 46 firearms at cost for a Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce fund-raiser.”
Feb. 8, the shop will provide guns at cost for the Safari Club International Nebraska Chapter’s annual fund-raiser at the Strategic Air and Space Museum. “We’ll go there and actually book guns for them,” Max said.
Max is also available at the shop in Plattsmouth at 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“I’m always available by appointment,” Max said. Customers may contact Max at 402.297.8410.
