When it comes to gunsmithing, Bill and Will Cover own it lock, stock and barrel at their new shop in Weeping Water.
The father and son duo opened their new business, Lock Stock and Barrel Gun Works LLC, at 221 West Eldora Ave. in the lower level of Grandpa Snazzy’s Building. The shop specializes in professional cleaning, restoration and repair of firearms. It also carries a stock of common ammunition, accessories, muzzle-loading components and a modest selection of new and used firearms for sale.
The Covers celebrated the shop’s grand opening last Saturday, during Weeping Water Chamber of Commerce’s annual Come Home for Christmas promotion.
Bill said the shop was a natural fit for him and his dad. “Dad and I are lifelong hunters and gun enthusiasts. Six years ago I enrolled in an online gunsmithing course when I got a job with the Boy Scouts of America. I turned over the entire course to dad and he took all the classes,” Bill said. “I’m more of a silent partner, so it will be dad in the shop.”
Will said the shop officially opened Nov. 22, but the ribbon cutting and grand opening fit well with the holiday celebration Dec. 2.
Getting the space ready for the business took a little time. “We did some remodeling,” Bill said. “We put walls on two sides.”
Owning a gunsmithing business also requires obtaining a Federal Firearms License. “We got that in mid-September,” Will said.
Now that every tool and product is neatly arranged for easy access and all products on hand for purchase, Will is more than ready for business.
“It’s nice to have a relationship with a gunsmith. That’s a huge asset,” said Gregg Meyer.
Bill and Will Cover look forward to assisting customers with the preservation and restoration of family firearms. The shop’s open hours are 1-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and by appointment.
