PLATTSMOUTH – The Plattsmouth girls crossed the first games off their 2017-18 calendar this weekend with matchups against Norris and Omaha Mercy.

Norris 60, Plattsmouth 18

Norris relied on an experienced lineup to stop Plattsmouth Friday night. Many NHS players had helped the program finish second in last year’s state tournament. Seniors Rylie Bryant, Valerie Gabel and Nyah Chambers and juniors Maddy Ramsey and Molly Ramsey headlined the list of veteran Titans.

Plattsmouth head coach Steve Owens said the Titans made the most of their height advantage in the post. Chambers used her 6-foot-1 frame to score eight points and 6-foot freshman Brianna Stai added 12 points off the bench.

“Our girls had a great attitude coming in,” Owens said. “They were ready to play and they were confident about their chances. Norris just has a really, really good program. They had a taller team than us and that made a difference when it came to rebounding. There were a couple of points in the game where they had their 6-footers in and our tallest player was 5-foot-7.”

Norris burst out to a 21-4 lead after 12 minutes of action and led 39-12 at the break. The team used a 26-6 run in the third quarter to ice the victory.

Kayla Harvey and Bella Chappell each scored five points for Plattsmouth. Chappell added two rebounds and Harvey grabbed one rebound. Adyson Blecke posted four points, three rebounds and one steal and Kira Leget generated two points, five rebounds and two steals.

Taylor Caba collected two points, two rebounds and two assists and Rachel Widick made two steals and one board. Chloe Sabatka had two blocks and one rebound, Sierra Witherell hauled in five rebounds and Katie Rathman made one steal and one rebound. Samantha Huckleberry had one rebound and one steal and Lexi Schroeder collected one steal.

Owens said the program could take solace in the fact that the Plattsmouth junior varsity team defeated Norris 53-40 earlier in the evening. Caba, Chappell, Harvey, Leget, Rathman, Sabatka and Schroeder all played multiple quarters in that game before making their varsity appearances.

“Seeing how the JV played tonight was really encouraging,” Owens said. “We played well as a team on both ends of the court and had a lot of energy. Our goal is to make that transfer to the varsity level. Those sophomores will be playing a lot of minutes at both levels, so they’ll be able to get a lot of experience and knowledge.”
