PLATTSMOUTH – Plattsmouth and Norris created dozens of action-filled moments in their conference soccer showdown Thursday night.
The Titans emerged from the Eastern Midlands Conference battle with a hard-fought victory.
Norris used a pair of late goals to edge the Plattsmouth girls 3-1. The teams were tied 1-1 before the Titans knocked a pair of shots into the net in the final 3:05 of regulation. Norris (4-5) won its second EMC match of the season and claimed its third road victory. PHS saw its mark change to 4-7.
The teams spent most of the first half in the middle portion of Blue Devil Stadium’s soccer pitch. Both defenses prevented any shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes of the game. PHS goalkeeper Lexi Kuhn ended the contest’s first scoring threat when she snagged a soccer ball out of harm’s way just past the midway point of the half.
The game opened up in the final four minutes of the period. Norris created a scoring chance from the upper-right portion of the penalty box at the 3:50 mark. Kuhn kept zeroes on the scoreboard when she made a leaping one-handed save against the Titans.
Kuhn then jumpstarted Plattsmouth’s offense with a long kick downfield. Fellow senior Zoey Mitchell corralled the ball at the 50-yard line and raced past the Norris defense for an open look. She fired a left-footed shot into the net with 3:07 remaining.
Plattsmouth used a pair of defensive gems to maintain the 1-0 lead early in the second half. PHS defender Katie Rathman knocked away a Norris shot in front of the net at the 37:48 mark, and Kuhn registered a sliding save on a shot by Maddie Duran four minutes later.
The Titans deadlocked the match with 29:01 to go. Norris freshman Molly Ramsey collected a pass and found herself with a one-on-one opportunity in the penalty box. She drilled her game-tying attempt into the righthand side of the net.
Both schools nearly went ahead in the next 25 minutes. Norris came close to knocking in a corner kick with 21:15 left, and Plattsmouth fired a shot that barely missed the side of the net five minutes later. Norris goalkeeper Valerie Gabel then saved a fast Plattsmouth shot with 12:12 on the clock.
The Titans broke open the game with a pair of late scoring chances. Ramsey used her quickness to outrun a pair of PHS defenders for a goal with 3:05 remaining. Norris then earned a corner kick on its next possession. Duran knocked a curling kick that followed a trail to the back post. Jenae Tilford ran to the spot and made a leaping header into the net.
Plattsmouth will resume its season April 19 with a road trip to Auburn. The Blue Devils and Bulldogs are scheduled to begin action at 5 p.m.
