WAHOO – The Elmwood-Murdock boys geared up for the postseason Saturday afternoon in a showdown between two of the state’s top basketball teams.
Wahoo stopped the Knights 67-54 in the regular-season finale for both schools. The Warriors entered the day ranked first in Class C-1 and the Knights came into the game rated fifth in Class C-2. Wahoo’s only two losses of the season had come to Platteview, which is ranked fourth in Class B. E-M’s only defeats prior to Saturday had been to Falls City Sacred Heart and Auburn.
Wahoo (21-2) rushed out of the scoring gates in the first quarter. The Warriors built an 18-4 lead and ended the period on top 21-9. Elmwood-Murdock (18-3) responded with a flurry of points over the next 16 minutes. The team cut the halftime deficit to 30-24 and moved within 44-41 by the end of the third quarter.
Wahoo created separation on the scoreboard with a 14-3 run to start the fourth quarter. The team opened the period with a 3-pointer and added several interior baskets during the stretch.
Wahoo scored 60 or more points for the 20th time this year. The squad surpassed 80 points in six previous games.
Wes Dreamer helped Elmwood-Murdock with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Zach Rust secured 12 points, nine assists, four rebounds, two steals and one block, and Carter Bornemeier posted 15 points, two assists, two steals and one block.
Payton Frahm gave E-M production in the paint with two points, six rebounds and one assist. Austin Meisinger collected one point and one rebound and Massimo Lojing tallied three assists and one rebound. Nolan Langfeldt chipped in three assists, one rebound and one steal.
Elmwood-Murdock will begin postseason action Tuesday in the Subdistrict C2-2 Tournament at Wahoo High School. The top-seeded Knights will play either fourth-seeded Archbishop Bergan or fifth-seeded Omaha Brownell-Talbot at 6 p.m. Second-seeded Yutan and third-seeded Palmyra will play in the other subdistrict semifinal at 7:45 p.m.
