WAHOO – The Elmwood-Murdock boys came close to snapping Yutan’s 22-game winning streak in their subdistrict showdown Friday night.
The Chieftains were able to gain their 23rd victory in a row by holding off E-M’s late comeback attempt.
Second-seeded Yutan collected a 48-44 triumph over top-seeded Elmwood-Murdock in the Subdistrict C2-2 Tournament at Wahoo. Yutan secured a spot in the District C2-1 Final and knotted the season series with E-M at one victory apiece. Elmwood-Murdock had defeated Yutan 58-47 in the opening game of the year.
Yutan (23-1) grabbed momentum in the first few minutes. The team went ahead 8-2 and built its first-quarter lead to 17-7. The Chieftains created a 25-14 advantage midway through the second quarter and held a 40-26 edge late in the third quarter.
Elmwood-Murdock (19-4) came charging back in the final stanza. Zach Rust made two free throws to cut the deficit to 42-33 with six minutes to play, and he sank a pair of additional free throws with 90 seconds left to make it 44-39. Rust later knocked down a 3-pointer to create a 45-44 game with 25.8 seconds to play.
Yutan preserved the victory with its work at the foul line. The team made two free throws on its next possession and connected on a third late free throw to create the 48-44 margin.
Wes Dreamer collected 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists for Elmwood-Murdock. Rust generated 16 points, seven boards and three assists, and Nolan Langfeldt tallied three points, two assists, two steals, one rebound and one block.
Carter Bornemeier ended the evening with six points, one rebound and one steal. Payton Frahm posted two rebounds and one steal, Massimo Lojing produced one board and one block and Austin Meisinger and Tyler Marlatt each had one rebound.
Elmwood-Murdock’s work during the regular season means the team has a chance to earn a wild-card berth into the state tournament. The Knights are currently fourth in Class C-2 wild-card point standings. The team will learn whether it will receive a wild card after Monday night’s district finals.
Ponca (26-1), Yutan and Hastings St. Cecilia (21-3) are the three teams ahead of Elmwood-Murdock in wild-card standings. Ponca will play Creighton, Yutan will face Freeman and Hastings St. Cecilia will battle Centennial in district finals.
