OMAHA – Plattsmouth wrestlers squared off with athletes from across Nebraska this week during action at the Class B State Meet.
Ten Blue Devils represented the school on Thursday morning, Friday morning, Friday afternoon, Friday night and Saturday morning. Plattsmouth collected 13th place in Class B team standings with 44 points. Two athletes earned medals and the team secured multiple victories on the mat.
Dominic Cherek finished his season 21-20 at 106 pounds. He fell to Gabe Grice of Omaha Gross in the first round Thursday morning. Blair’s Luke Bailey collected an 8-2 decision in the first round of consolations Friday morning.
Anthony Long ended his campaign 28-9 at 113 pounds. He won his first-round match by injury default and was edged 3-2 by Bryce Brown of Hastings in the quarterfinals. Long pinned McCook’s Trevor Felber in the consolation round Friday morning. Boys Town’s William Lomax posted a 3-2 decision in the third round of consolations late Friday afternoon.
Chase Larsen captured a fourth-place medal at 120 pounds. He finished his season 32-10. Larsen swept through his first two matches Thursday morning with a major decision and decision. Lexington’s Andy Rojas secured a pin over Larsen in the semifinals Friday night. Larsen defeated Ralston’s Noah Talmadge 3-2 in the consolation semifinals Saturday morning, and he fell to Blayne Kile of Hastings in overtime in the third-place match.
Chance Taylor completed the season 20-13 at 126 pounds. He defeated Wayne’s Cameron Muhs 17-13 in the first round and fell to Trevor Kluck of Aurora in the quarterfinals. Taylor suffered an injury against Kluck and ended the tournament with a medical forfeit.
Caleb Laney ended the campaign 12-12 at 132 pounds. Beatrice’s Benjamin Garland won a first-round match by pin Thursday morning. Blair’s Zach Orton decisioned Laney in the first round of consolations Friday morning.
Zachary Nielsen completed the winter with a 26-22 mark at 138 pounds. Sidney’s Brody Raines won a first-round match by pin Thursday morning. Schuyler’s Miguel Roman decisioned Nielsen in the first round of consolations on Friday.
Jayden Wooten finished his campaign 26-12 at 160 pounds. Bennington’s Logan MacDonald earned a major decision in Thursday’s first round, and Wooten rebounded with a 5-2 victory over Zachary Serna of Norris on Friday. O’Neill’s Cauy Shaw decisioned Wooten in the second round of consolations.
Drake Rader ended the winter 16-14 at 182 pounds. Grand Island Northwest’s Jeb South won by pin in Thursday’s opening round. Fort Calhoun’s Ronnie Albertson collected a 3-1 victory in the first round of consolations Friday morning.
Devin Pfeifer captured a fourth-place medal at 195 pounds. He finished his season 38-9. Pfeifer swept his first two matches Thursday morning with one pin and one decision. Grand Island Northwest’s Grady Griess improved to 54-0 Friday night with a pin in the semifinals. Pfeifer regrouped Saturday morning with a pin of Gothenburg’s Noah Gugelman in the consolation semifinals. Cody Ybarra of Gering won the third-place match with a pin.
Trevor Nielsen finished his campaign 32-12 at 220 pounds. He pinned Holdrege’s Bronson Titus in the first round and fell to Ashland-Greenwood’s Erik Pike in the quarterfinals. Nielsen rebounded with a 2-1 decision over Waverly’s Logan Schuelke in Friday morning’s consolation round. Jon Merten of Boone Central/Newman Grove captured a 7-2 victory in Friday night’s third round of consolations.
Plattsmouth will resume its season Saturday at the Class B State Duals Championships in Kearney. The Blue Devils will travel to the University of Nebraska-Kearney Health and Sports Center for daylong action. Fourth-seeded Plattsmouth will battle fifth-seeded Hastings in the first round at 9 a.m. Additional duals will take place during the afternoon.
Plattsmouth will make the program’s fifth appearance at the state duals tournament. The Blue Devils won the 2016 state title and placed third in 2017. PHS also traveled to Kearney for the event in 2013 and 2015.
