Fremont will be the starting point for local athletes hoping to compete later this summer at the Junior Goodwill Games in Atlanta.

The Junior Goodwill Games local meet is scheduled for Friday at Memorial Stadium in Fremont. Boys and girls will compete in age divisions 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13 in track, basketball and swimming.

Track and basketball registration will begin at 10 a.m. with swimming registration to start at 11:45. Athletes must provide a copy of their birth certificate when they register. The event is free.

The top three placers in each event will advance to the sectional meet scheduled for later this summer in North Platte. Scores from the various sectionals across the country will be compared to determine which athletes advance to nationals in Atlanta.

Chris Paulson, the local event's coordinator, said the competition is open to any athlete in Fremont and the surrounding area, including Arlington, North Bend and Wahoo. This is the second consecutive year the meet has been in Fremont.

"It's a good event," Paulson said. "It gives kids the opportunity to come out and compete. The bigger the turnout we have, the better. The only way this will get bigger is if people come out and see what it is all about."

The youths can compete in any or all of the three events. The basketball event is a hotshot competition where athletes are awarded points for shots made from various areas of the court. Swimming consists of a 25-yard race in the Memorial Pool.

Track consists of a 50-yard sprint, discus throw (Frisbee toss) and a standing long jump. Paulson said a point system based on the times and distances is used to determine the order of finish.

Officials with the Fremont Parks and Recreation Department are helping organize the event, including the leaders of the parks' playground program.
