It doesn’t happen every year.
But this year, the Trinity Lutheran Girls’ basketball team is headed to a national event.
To celebrate, the public is invited to attend Wednesday evening Lenten meals from 5-6:15 tonight and March 14 at Trinity, 1546 N. Luther Road.
A freewill offering will be accepted for the meal with proceeds going toward the girls’ trip to Indiana, but they will share the food with anyone who wishes to come and celebrate.
The team will compete in the National Lutheran Schools Tournament of Champions Basketball Tournament in Valparaiso, Indiana.
On March 22, the girls will head to Indiana, where they’re set to play on March 23-24.
“If they keep winning, it will go to Sunday (March 25),” said Loren Wilshusen, Trinity’s athletic director.
The girls and their families will serve the Lenten meals.
Tonight’s menu will be: sloppy Joes, macaroni salad, chips, a dirt cup dessert and beverages.
Next week’s menu is in the planning stages, but the main course will include a variety of sandwiches made by the Trinity Ladies Aid.
“The girls will serve the meal, but the ladies are providing all of the sandwiches — a team effort,” Wilshusen said.
Wilshusen invites area residents to attend the meals.
“You want to celebrate because they’re very good kids and the last time the girls went was in 2013 and the last time the boys went was 2009,” Wilshusen said. “It’s a privilege for the girls. You don’t go every year so to celebrate we want to invite anybody else who would like to come. We want to have the community share if they’d like.”
