A Fremont man accused of drugging a woman’s drink at a local bar was sentenced to jail Tuesday in Dodge County Court.

Aaron Freeman, 26, was sentenced to six months in jail for third-degree assault, a Class I misdemeanor.

A request to continue his sentencing so he could get a chemical evaluation was denied.

After a restitution hearing, Freeman was ordered to pay $2,010 in restitution.

“The victim suffered physical problems for several days,” said Dodge County Attorney Paul Vaughan. “I don’t think the defendant has shown any remorse for his actions. It caused a serious life-altering event for this lady.”

Freeman’s attorney, Shane Placek, argued otherwise.

“He’s always been apologetic and admitted that he’s done something wrong,” Placek said. “I don’t see him as the kind of defendant that sought to do harm that night.”

Judge Kenneth Vampola said he took Freeman’s lack of any serious convictions into consideration before sentencing him to six months in jail. Freeman faced up to one year in prison on the amended charge.
