Fremont Area Medical Center has announced the addition of general surgeon Adam Pentel, DO, to the hospital’s medical staff.
Pentel joined Drs. Stephen Dreyer and Keith Leatherbury at The Surgical Group on Aug. 1.
Pentel earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Mo. He completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, Mich., affiliated with Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine.
He also holds a masters of physical therapy from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, and initially practiced as a licensed physical therapist for five years. He became interested in pursuing a career as a physician while working closely with the general surgeon who oversaw the wound clinic.
“It seemed to be a good complement to my skills,” Pentel said.
Osteopathic doctors are trained in traditional medical techniques, just like MDs, but they also receive additional training in musculo-skeletal manipulation.
Pentel has special interest in laparoscopic hernia surgery.
“For many people, a hernia can be repaired laparoscopically — the operation is performed through very small incisions in the abdomen,” he said. “This minimally invasive technique can be clinically beneficial to patients.”
The Surgical Group is located at 2830 N. Clarkson St. and can be reached at 402-721-6333.
