Edwin J. Kucera, 87, of Valparaiso died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, at Saunders County Care Center in Wahoo.
He was born May 31, 1922, in rural Weston to August and Mary (Matousek) Kucera. He attended School District 113 west of Weston. When he was finished going to school, he worked on the farm helping his father. He married Marie Ratkovec on Nov. 20, 1945, in Touhy. They made their home on a farm west of Weston that was homesteaded by his grandfather, Frederick Kucera. There, Edwin was a grain farmer and raised cattle and hogs for many years. He also was a Cargill Seed dealer and worked at Hakel’s Truck Stop in Weston from 1963 to 1971. He retired from farming in 1984 and moved to Valparaiso in 1999. He had been a resident at Saunders County Care Center in Wahoo since May 2008.
He was a parishioner of St. Vitus Church and served as the president of School District 113 and 74 for 30 years.
Survivors include: his wife; daughters, Sharon (and husband, Dan) Spicka of Wahoo and Sandy (and husband, John) Vlcan of Fremont; a son, Gary Kucera of Weston; two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, two brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Vitus Catholic Church in Touhy with the Rev. Thomas Brouillette officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7:30 p.m. today at the church with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Friday at the church. Burial will be in St. Vitus Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to St. Vitus Church and Saunders County Care Center.
