Darrell Marvin Miller, 92 years, of Fremont died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, at his home. Darrell was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Fremont to Zola E. and Clara J. (Swanson) Miller.
He attended grade school and high school in Fremont. He joined the U.S. Navy on Aug. 13, 1943, and retired Aug. 19, 1970, serving in WW II, Korea and Vietnam. Darrell married Hazel E. Howard on Oct. 18, 1946, in Ralston. He attended Navy Boot camp in Fargo, Idaho, and was assigned to Destroyer Stevens DD479 which was one of two destroyers that carried aircraft. While serving on the Stevens, it earned nine battle stars, three accommodations in 16 operations and shot down fourteen Japanese planes. After VJ Day, they took over all Japanese Shipping in Tsingtao, China. He transferred to the Navy Air in 1946. While stationed in Hawaii, he made Embassy runs throughout Asia and the Middle East. He served in Korea and Vietnam. He earned 15 service ribbons and eight stars Asiatic Pacific, two stars Philippines Liberation, five stars good conduct, Navy Unit Citation and qualified Flight Engineer Wings. While in the Navy they lived in Nebraska, Hawaii, Texas, Newfoundland, Rhode Island, Florida, New Zealand and Antarctica. He worked for the Fremont Department of Utilities from August 1970 until retiring in September of 1990.
In 1989, he was qualified as an engineer for the Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Railroad. He served as a Board Member of the National Railroad Historical Society and the Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Railroad. He was a member of the former First Christian Church in Fremont, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and the Navy Fleet Reserve.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel; sons, Duane Miller of Fremont and Craig (Jacque) Miller of Beatrice; daughter, Karen Miller of O’Neill, and special friend, Bryan Baker of Fremont; foster daughter, Wendy Cooper of Fremont; three granddaughters, six stepgrandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and sister, Darlene Knipping of Grand Junction, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. The Rev. David Paul will officiate. Visitation with family present will be on Sunday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. Burial with military honors will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.
