Ellen Engel, 93, died on Nov. 17, 2017, in Kansas City, Missouri, of natural causes. Her body was bequeathed to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 6, 2018, at the Avondale United Methodist Church (3101 NE Winn Road, Avondale, MO 64117).
Ellen was born on Feb. 17, 1924, in Benson, the second of three daughters born to Jens and Dorothy Henricksen. She grew up in Fremont. In 1944, she married Richard Engel in Washington, D.C. After living on the East Coast for several years, they moved to Kansas City in 1949. She was a member of Avondale United Methodist Church and the Stepping Stones Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995, and many years ago by her parents, and her sisters, Ann (Robert) Kouny and Elaine (Frank) Cukar.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Richard (Jamie) Engel of Longboat Key, Florida, Roger (Searle) Engel of Kansas City, Missouri, and Gretchen (David) Engel Morton of Brunswick, New York; five grandchildren, Alison Engel, Megan (Engel) McSheffrey, David Engel, Ingrid and Amelia Morton, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to recognize Roger and Searle Engel for their selfless giving of time and care to Ellen after she could no longer care for herself. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to a charity of your choice.
