Robert L. “Bob” Smith, 86, of Lyons died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at Oakland Heights in Oakland, following a lengthy illness.
He was born and raised in Lyons, the son of Leonard and Lona (Robertson) Smith. He was a lifelong Lyons resident. After graduating from Lyons High School in 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy for the duration of World War II. He married Dorothy Mae Elming on June 19, 1955, in Lyons.
He worked for Armour Foods for a period of time before entering a partnership in the Food Market in Lyons. He later purchased the entire business, eventually owning three store locations, Lyons, Tekamah and Fremont.
He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lyons. He was active in the community including the Lyons Community Club, Industrial Development Group, board member of First National Bank and Affiliated Foods Norfolk. He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge (attaining 32nd degree), American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include: his wife, Dorothy Mae (Elming) Smith of Lyons; sons and daughter, Jim (Jennifer), Margaret (friend, Vel), Terry, all of Lincoln, and Mike (Laura) of David City; son-in-law, Dennis Kempcke of Lincoln; sister, Densmer McIntyre of Lyons; brother, Leonard (Judy) Smith of Wisconsin; sisters-in-law; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter and three brothers-in-law.
A celebration of life service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Lyons with the Rev. Jeff Clark officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Lyons Cemetery with military honors by Robert Klase-Rogers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7998 and Harvey Lenig American Legion Post 83.
