Since September is National Library Card Sign-up Month it seems prudent to explain why every Fremont and Inglewood resident should own a library card. Many people are not familiar with the services and perks the library offers to our residents.

First and foremost, your card is FREE. Fremont residents (or property owners) are eligible for free library cards. Inglewood residents also get free cards as a result of an interlocal agreement with Inglewood. As long as you can show your permanent address is in the city limits of Inglewood or Fremont, your card is free.

The next most important reason to have a card is to checkout materials FREE of charge. Maybe you really want to read the new Patterson novel or watch the new Guardians of the Galaxy II movie, but you don’t have the money to buy the book or the DVD. Then just come to the library and “rent” the materials for free. If you are someone that buys DVDs and books, think how much money you can save in a year not buying DVDs and just “renting” them for free.

What if the library doesn’t have the movie or book you want? Well that’s simple — just ask for it! The library has turned to a patron-driven acquisition model which means – we buy what you want. Patrons can fill out Material Requests Forms online or in person and we will obtain the item you want. This way the library is purchasing materials the patrons want, to ensure we are meeting the needs of our community. We also have Interlibrary Loan available to patrons. You just fill out an ILL Form and we find the book at another library. We do charge the cost of shipping for ILL. But if we can’t find the item to buy, this would be another option.

The next best reason to have a library card is access to millions of online resources. Most of the online resources we own are available for access from your home computers! These resources include: databases for learning, investment information, entertainment, and job skills. We also have eBooks and audiobooks for download. Maybe you are at a point in your life that you need a change in your job, but finding a different job that interests you might require new skills. You can simply login and learn a new language, how to write apps for phones, or how to fix a car. The free education available can help put you in your new dream job, maybe find you a better paying job, or simply help you learn a new skill that you have always wanted to learn. Or maybe you travel for work and would like to hear an audiobook while you travel. You can download eBooks and audiobooks from our Overdrive app! It is as easy as logging into Facebook every day.

With all these reasons to have a FREE library card, what are you waiting for?
