Sen. Deb Fischer said Tuesday she made a direct pitch to President Donald Trump about the importance of the North American Free Trade Agreement to Nebraska and American agriculture during a White House meeting with a number of senators.

"During our conversation, I highlighted the significance of NAFTA to agricultural exports and related manufacturing jobs," Fischer said in a statement released following the meeting that focused on trade policy earlier in the day.

"I also stressed the need to safeguard the competitive advantage our agriculture producers and manufacturers have worked so hard to build," Fischer said.

"I had a good conversation with President Trump on the importance of trade to Nebraska and our country as a whole."
