Makenna Sullivan of Midland attempts to drive by Madison Mathews of Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday night during a Great Plains Athletic Conference game at the Wikert Event Center. DWU down the Lady Warriors 79-67.

A career-best scoring night for Ashley Bray was too much for Midland University to overcome against Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday night at the Wikert Event Center.

Bray finished with 30 points on 11-for-13 shooting from the field to spark the eighth-ranked Tigers to a 79-67 Great Plains Athletic Conference victory. The 6-foot-1 forward hit all four of her 3-point field goal attempts.

The Lady Warriors jumped to an 8-5 lead on the strength of a Joelle Overkamp 3 with 5:20 left in the opening quarter. The Tigers battled back behind five points from Rylie Osthus to lead 19-16 entering the second period.

Bray’s two free throws extended the DWU lead to 31-22 with 4:00 left in the half. Midland narrowed the gap to 38-31 on an Overkamp 3 heading into the break.

Midland closed to 45-39 on senior Megan Kucks’ 3 with 6:26 left in the third quarter, but Bray had six points during an 11-3 run that put the Tigers in control.

DWU led by as many as 18 points in the final quarter. Osthus’ free throw made it 70-52 with 6:23 remaining before the Lady Warriors went on a 9-2 run that included an Overkamp 3.

Midland got as close as 74-67 on a Madison Severson 3 with :29 left, but Kynedi Cheeseman scored the final five points to secure the win for DWU.

Overkamp led Midland with 23 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Amanda Hansen of West Point contributed 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. Kucks had eight points and two assists.

Cheeseman finished with 13 points and Osthus had 10 for the Tigers, who improve to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the GPAC. DWU will play Nov. 29 at Presentation College in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

The Lady Warriors, 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the league, play at 1 Saturday afternoon against Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
