ASHLAND — Omaha Roncalli finished the first quarter on a 10-1 scoring run and went on to defeat Fremont Bergan 52-39 Saturday in the finals of the Ashland-Greenwood Tournament.
The Crimson Pride jumped to a 6-3 lead, but Bergan tied it at 6 on a Trentin Ostrand 3 with 3:45 left in the opening quarter. After Taiden Reed’s trey put Roncalli up 9-6, Dylan Kucera countered with a two-point field goal to narrow the gap to one.
The Knights were limited to a Dre Vance free throw in the final three minutes of the period while the Crimson Pride extended their advantage. Alex Rodgers’ basket at the buzzer put Roncalli up 19-9 heading into the second period.
Kucera hit a pair of 3-point baskets in the second quarter to help the Knights close to 28-23 at halftime. Roncalli led by as many as 14 points in the second half.
“We just didn’t finish strong enough in the lane tonight,” Bergan assistant coach Doug Moore said. “We had good looks, but they are really physical. They play strong man-to-man defense.”
Rodgers led the Crimson Pride with 15 points. Jack Dotzler added 14.
“We lost some of their shooters at times tonight and they beat us in transition,” Moore said. “It was the first time this season that I’ve seen a team beat us that bad in transition. We’ll watch film on this. Even though we lost the game, we can learn from watching the film and that will make us better in the end.”
Grant Frickenstein led the Knights with 12 points, including seven in the second half. Vance and Kucera finished with nine points apiece.
The Knights, 8-3, will host Arlington at 7:45 Saturday night.
