Fremont High School swept the doubles matches on Monday on its way to defeating Bellevue West 6-3 in the boys tennis dual.
“This was truly a team win today,” Fremont coach Justin Bigsby said. “We traded singles matches back-and-fourth and ended in a 3-3 tie. It came down to doubles and the boys really stepped up when they needed to for us.”
Alex Bigsby and Drew Walling of the Tigers defeated Nolan Lausterer and Payton Moreno 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Justin Pemberton and Jacob Friedrich of FHS downed Matt Errett and Jack Sullivan 9-7 at No. 2 while Austin and Brenna Callahan rolled to an 8-5 win over Caleb Lemon and Tyler Conant at No. 1.
“Alex and Drew got a very convincing win which made me feel a little more comfortable,” Coach Bigsby said. “Then Austin and Brenna put together arguably their best match of the season. Lemon and Conant were 8-1 coming into today. For Austin and Brennan to step up and play as aggressive as they did in the second half of the match was really impressive.”
Bigsby also praised the tenacity of Pemberton and Friedrich.
“They got the big match that they’ve need for two weeks now,” he said. “They were down 6-7 and easily could’ve quit, but they played with poise and confidence to earn a hard-fought victory.”
In singles, Bigsby earned an 8-1 win over Lemon at No. 1. Austin Callahan beat Errett 8-4 at No. 3 while Brennan Callahan prevailed 8-1 over Sullivan at No. 5.
West’s wins in singles came at No. 2 (Conant beating Walling 8-1), No. 4 (Lausterer downing Pemberton 8-6) and No. 6 (Moreno topping Friedrich 8-4).
In junior varsity action, the Tigers won 10 of 12 singles and four of six doubles matches to prevail 14-4. Freshman Shane Miller led the way with wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles.
The Tigers will host a triangular with Lincoln Southwest and Lincoln North Star at 4 Thursday afternoon. On Monday they will play in the Papillion-LaVista Invitational at the Koch Tennis Center in Omaha.
