VALLEY — Ryan Mlnarik is coaching an unselfish group of basketball players.
That was evident Saturday afternoon as Fremont Bergan recorded 19 assists during a 59-38 win over Douglas County West. The win improves the Knights to 2-0.
“The one area we have improved on the most since our scrimmage with Seward (on Nov. 21) is that we’ve learned to share the basketball and have become a better passing team,” Mlnarik said.
The Knights jumped to a 20-10 first-quarter lead. The Falcons narrowed the deficit to 29-21 at halftime, but Bergan outscored DC West in the third and fourth quarter.
“I think we’ve been able to play at a good pace,” Mlnarik said. “The kids have done a nice job of running the floor and being opportunistic when we’ve had numbers. They have done a really good job of not wasting possessions. We push the ball hard, but if there is not an open look, we move it back out and get into our (offense). We’ve gone a good job of executing.”
Junior guard Dre Vance led the Knights with 18 points and seven assists. Dylan Kucera had 15 points while Grant Frickenstein added 10 points, four assists and four rebounds. Riley Lindberg had a team-best six rebounds.
“Our bench play has also been really good,” Mlnarik said. “We have guys coming off the bench that are bringing energy to the court and are being very productive.”
One of those players, Trentin Ostrand, finished with eight points.
“He hit a pair of 3s against DC West that came at critical times for us,” Mlnarik said.
Spencer Hays led the Falcons with 11 poiints and Trevor Wald added 10.
The Knights will look to move to 3-0 on Friday night when they host Omaha Brownell-Talbot. On Saturday, Bergan plays at David City Aquinas. The Monarchs are 2-0 heading into Tuesday night’s game against Howells-Dodge.
“They are very athletic and have a deep team,” Mlnarik said. “Comparative to last year, they have more guys that can score the basketball.”
The Knights also won a pair of games at the junior varsity level. On Friday night, Bergan downed Omaha Christian Academy 58-20. Tyten Vance had 15 points and Dylan Gartner added 14.
On Saturday, Bergan beat the Falcons 53-48. Shea Gossett led the Knights with 11 points and thunder Myers contributed nine.
