ASHLAND – The long holiday break didn’t seem to have a negative effect on the Fremont Bergan girls basketball team.
In fact, coach Nate Pribnow said he saw a more energized Lady Knights’ team take the court on Friday at the Ashland-Greenwood Holiday Tournament.
Bergan raced to an early lead and never relinquished it, defeating the host Bluejays 57-21.
Friday marked the Lady Knights’ first game in 10 days. Prior to the holiday break, Bergan had played six games in a span of 11 days.
“We looked fast,” Pribnow said on his postgame radio show. “We looked like a team that has had seven or eight days off. We were pretty tired going into the break.”
Bergan (8-1) scored 14 points before Ashland-Greenwood got on the scoreboard with just over a minute to play in the first quarter.
Haley Kempf, Katie Sleister and Kaia McIntyre then each knocked down buckets to give the Lady Knights a 20-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
“We got off to a fast start and that was the biggest difference in the game,” Pribnow said. “Our press caused a lot of headaches for them early on and created some easy scoring opportunities.”
Bergan’s offense maintained its efficiency in the second quarter as the Lady Knights outscored the Bluejays 17-5.
“I was really pleased with the way we played defensively,” Pribnow said.
Mackenzie Peitzmeier and Kempf each scored six points in the third quarter as Bergan increased its lead to 37 points (53-16). A running clock closed out the game in the fourth quarter.
Peitzmeier finished with a game-high 17 points. Kempf had 14 points while Allison Dieckmann added eight. Sleister, McIntyre and Lauren Baker all had four.
A majority of Bergan’s points were scored in close proximity to the basket. Peitzmeier had Bergan’s lone 3-point basket of the contest.
“We didn’t make a whole lot of outside shots, which is good,” Pribnow said. “We didn’t have to rely on the outside shot. We were getting shots inside the paint when we wanted to. Playing fast was really beneficial for us.”
Senior Taya Craven led a young Bluejays squad (0-6) with eight points. Haley Lyons contributed six points.
Bergan will face Class B Omaha Roncalli (3-5) for the tournament championship at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Crimson Pride defeated Plattsmouth 53-48 on Friday.
