The holiday break is coming to a close for area high school basketball teams.
The boys and girls squads for Fremont High School will return to action Thursday with the start of the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament.
The FHS girls, fresh off of recording a 3-1 record at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, will face Lincoln Southeast at 3:45 Thursday at Lincoln Northeast. A win advances the Tigers to Friday’s semifinals at 5:30 p.m. against either top-seeded Lincoln East or eighth-seeded Lincoln North Star.
The two losers of the first-round games will meet at 2 p.m. Friday.
The final rounds of the tournament are set for Saturday. The seventh-place game is scheduled for 2 pm. followed by the fifth-place game at 3:45. The third-place game will tip-off at 5:30 with the championship scheduled for 7:15.
Coach Mark Williams and the FHS boys will look to build upon their momentum of beating Lincoln Northeast last Friday night.
The Tigers will face third-seeded Lincoln North Star at 5:30 Thursday night at East. The winner will play either second-seeded Grand Island or No. 7 Lincoln Southeast at 7:15 Friday night. The losers of the first-round games will meet at 3:45 Friday afternoon.
The seventh-place game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday followed by the fifth-place game at 3:45. The third-place matchup is set for 5:30 with the championship scheduled for 7:15.
The Fremont Bergan squads will play at Ashland-Greenwood starting Friday.
The girls will play the host school at 2 p.m. while the boys will face the Bluejays at 3:45. The girls’ consolation game is Saturday at 10:30 a.m. followed by the boys’ at 12:15. The girls’ title game will tip-off at 2 p.m. followed by the boys’ game at 3:45.
The Logan View girls will face Elmwood-Murdock at 11:30 Friday morning in the Omaha Brownell-Talbot Tournament. The LV boys face the host school at 1 p.m.
The consolation and championship games are scheduled for Saturday.
North Bend will host its tournament starting Friday. The Nebraska City girls and Omaha Duchesne will play at 2 p.m. while the Nebraska City boys and Elkhorn Mount Michael will face off at 4 p.m. North Bend and Concordia square off in the other two games — the girls’ at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 8.
The consolation games will be at 2 (girls) and 4 (boys) on Saturday. The championships will be decided at 6 (girls) and 8 (boys).
The Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout in Wayne will include Arlington. The girls play Laurel-Concord-Coleridge at 4 Thursday afternoon while the boys face Gordon-Rushville at 5:30.
Second-round games are scheduled Friday with the seventh-, fifth-, third-place and championship games set for Saturday.
