OMAHA — Fremont High School couldn’t keep up with the hot shooting of Omaha Skutt on Tuesday night as the Skyhawks downed the Tigers 72-39.
The Skyhawks found their stroke from behind the arc hitting 10 3-point baskets, including six from senior forward Austin Ash.
Ash put Skutt up early scoring eight straight points to start the game.
The Tigers would cut the deficit to 8-5 on a 3 by Triston Keeney and a pair of free throws by Riley Harms on consecutive possessions.
Following Ash’s run of eight straight points, Skutt’s Jackson Gordon went on a little run of his own scoring six straight to give the Skyhawks a 14-5 lead with 1:39 left in the quarter.
After taking a 17-5 lead into the second quarter, Skutt’s hot shooting continued as the Skyhawks built their lead to 41-15 at halftime. Along the way were five treys in the period.
Following a Dillon Dix free throw to cut the lead to 28-13, the Skyhawks poured it on from behind the arc hitting three straight three-pointers from Tyson Gordon, Ash, and Jake Kudron to put them up 37-13 with 1:09 before half.
In the third quarter the Tigers finally found some rhythm offensively by way of a 10-0 run to cut Skutt’s lead to 50-27.
An Austin Callahan 3 got the short run started and that was continued as Dix stole a pass on the next Skyhawks possession and completed a traditional three-point play.
The scoring spurt was capped off by a pair of buckets from Jake Heineman and Callahan, but the Tigers would still trail 58-30 going into the final quarter.
With Harms fouling out early in the fourth quarter, Heineman stepped up and led the Tigers offensively finishing with 12 points in the game. Harms finished with six.
Ash led Skutt, 2-0, with 22 points and Gordon added 12. FHS falls to 0-3.
