BEATRICE — John Sajevic of Fremont is in second place after the opening day of the 109th Nebraska Amateur Golf Championship.
David Easley of Lincoln leads the tournament at the Beatrice Country Club with a 5-under-par 67. Easley made six birdies on the day, including three straight on No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4. His round also included 11 pars and just one bogey — on the par-4 No. 17.
Sajevic nearly matched Easley by recording five birdies, 12 pars and one bogey — on the 209-yard No. 8. Sajevic also birdied three of the first four holes, settling for a par on No. 2.
Ryan Nietfeldt of Elkhorn is in third place with a 69. Jay Cottam of Hebron, Sean Song of Omaha and Koy Potthoff of Kearney are tied for fourth. All three golfers shot a 70.
There is a five-way tie for seventh place. Trent Morrison and Nolan Maschka of Omaha are joined by Mitchell Klooz of Laurel, Patrick Clare of Lincoln and Noah Hoffman of McCook at 71.
There is also a seven-way tie for 12th place. Among the golfers at the even-par 72 are defending champion Alex Schaake of Omaha. Former University of Nebraska and National Football League player Jay Moore of Lincoln is tied with four others at 73.
Three-time champion (2010, 2011 and 2013) Andy Sajevic of Fremont is tied for 29th with a 75. The former University of North Carolina golfer shot a 38 on the front and a 37 on the back.
Other area golfers in the tournament include: Blair’s Vance Janssen (tied for 46th at 77), Blair’s Brandt Radloff (tied for 57th at 78), Collin Brown of Fremont (tied for 78th at 81), Ben Deines of Fremont (tied for 86th at 82) and Hunter Giesselmann of Fremont (tied for 105th at 85).
