The Fremont Express baseball team compiled a 4-1 record and finished third in the USSSA 13U state tournament last weekend in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
On Friday, the Express beat the Diamond Kings, 8-0. Shaye Hoyle and Nate Wheeler combined on a four-hitter and the Express didn’t commit an error.
Caleb Herink, Ty Leriger, Deric Krous, and Owen Pruss led the offense. Herink had seven stolen bases, including a steal of home.
Also on Friday, the Express had 12 hits in a 12-2 win over the Junior Pride 12-2.
Ashton Swinscoe tripled and doubled with driving in five runs. Garrett Wiseman and Hoyle had two hits apiece.
Tyler Allen and Corey Rademacher led the defense while Damon Jordan earned the win. Krous also threw out three baserunners on the day from his catcher position.
The two pool play wins helped the Express to the No. 1 seed in the tournament that started Saturday.
The Express beat Seward 8-3 as Herink, Hoyle and Wheeler combined on a five-hitter. The defense, led by Wiseman and Allen, also played error-free.
Hoyle had three hits while Pruss had two. Brandon Welbes was hit by a pitch three times, tying an Express record.
Also on Saturday, the Express beat the Elkhorn Black 9-4.
Fremont had 14 hits, including a home run by Hoyle and triples by Krous and Rademacher. The Express stole 14 bases.
Krous and Wheeler combined on a four-hitter while Pruss and Jordan both turned unassisted double plays.
In the semifinals, the Elkhorn White downed the Express 12-10 in extra innings.
Krous had three hits, including a home run. Jordan had a single and a double. Hoyle tripled while Herink hit a leadoff double. The Express also stole 12 bases in the loss.
The Express ended the season winning 32 games. They finished third at state, second at the Ralston tournament, fifth in the Grover tournament, seventh at the Nebraska NIT and third at the Wahoo tournament.
