Try 1 month for 99¢

Fremont area residents looking to get into better shape will have a new option this winter as national health club franchise Planet Fitness will open a new location on east 23rd Street later this year.

Renovations are underway at the location of what will become the new 12,000-square-foot club that will abut Staples at the corner of Bell and east 23rd streets.

Although Planet Fitness Senior Public Relations Manager Becky Zirlen could not give an exact date that the health club plans to open, she did say the new facility will be up and running before the end of the year.

“We expect to open this winter,” she said.

When it opens, the new facility will offer cardio and strength equipment, free fitness training, and a Black Card Spa which will include HydroMassage beds, massage chairs and tanning booths for Planet Fitness Black Card Members.

Membership at all Planet Fitness facilities across the country starts at $10 a month, or $21.99 a month for the Planet Fitness Black Card. Black Card membership amenities include the ability to bring a guest for free, and the use of any of the more than 1,600 Planet Fitness locations nationwide.

Planet Fitness was originally founded in 1992 in Dover, New Hampshire by brothers Michael and Marc Grondahl and has grown to one of the largest franchisers and operators of fitness centers in the U.S.

According to Zirlen, along with providing affordable, high-quality fitness experiences to its members, Planet Fitness clubs also strive to be “Judgement Free Zones (sic).”

“We cater to first-time and casual gym-goers who may have never belonged to a gym before,” she said. “We always strive for a non-intimidating, judgement free atmosphere where our members can feel comfortable working out at their own pace.”

Planet Fitness’s effort to provide “Judgement Free Zones (sic)” even extends to the company’s own misspelling of “judgment,” according to released information.

Information on the company’s website states that the misspelling of judgment was actually a mistake back when the company first started using the phrase. While Planet Fitness considered changing it, they decided to keep the misspelling because it fits with its “judgment free personality.”

Another unique aspect of Planet Fitness is its monthly pizza and bagel giveaways to members.

Planet Fitness locations across the country hold a Pizza Night on the first Monday of every month, as well as serves bagels on the second Tuesday of every month.

According to released information, each Planet Fitness clubs serves more than 5,500 slices of pizza per year and more than 2,600 bagels per year.

The monthly Pizza Night began in Concord, New Hampshire as a way to thank customers for their patience following a daylong shortage of hot water. The popularity of the giveaway led the company to offer the perk monthly, according to released information.

Planet Fitness currently has five locations in Omaha as well as clubs in Papillion and Council Bluffs. There are also two Planet Fitness locations in Lincoln.

More information about Planet Fitness can be found on the company’s website planetfitness.com.
