The city of Plattsmouth and Cass County are applying to acquire the Federal Opportunity Zones Program for Census Tract 9611.
Plattsmouth City Administrator Erv Portis attended Tuesday’s county board meeting and requested the county be named on the application along with the city. “The program promotes investments in economic growth,” Portis said. “Nebraska has 15 Census Tracts eligible. Census Tract 9611 is in Cass County.”
Portis said the designated tract runs from Second Avenue in Plattsmouth to Young Road and from Highway 75 to the Missouri River. “We are preparing an application to nominate that tract,” Portis said. “If the government selects it, those who invest in developments in that tract are eligible for income or capital gains offsets. The Department of Treasury is still defining those rules.”
Commissioners agreed to add the county to the application. The deadline for nominations is March 21.
