PLATTSMOUTH – Two Conestoga Public Schools students were killed Sunday morning in a car accident on Highway 75 south of Plattsmouth.
Jenna Louise Miner, 14, and Savannah Robertson, 17, were involved in a two-car accident that injured two others. Miner lived in Beaver Lake and was a freshman at Conestoga High School. She was an honor roll student and was involved in several extracurricular activities at the school. Robertson had been a student at Conestoga for the past nine months and was active in many activities including the one-act play. She was a senior.
The accident took place near the Rock Bluff Road intersection with Highway 75 at 10:30 a.m. Cass County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Murray Fire and Rescue personnel, Plattsmouth Fire and Rescue crews and Nebraska State Patrol troopers all responded to the location.
Deputies said Robertson was northbound on Highway 75 from Beaver Lake when she lost control of her vehicle. The 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix slid across the center line and collided with a 1989 Ford Probe driven by Papillion resident Travis Laporte, 36.
Deputies said Miner was partially ejected from the Grand Prix after the collision. Medical officials pronounced her dead at the scene. A LifeNet medical helicopter transported Robertson to Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition. She was taken off life support Monday and passed away afterwards.
The collision also critically injured Travis Laporte and his brother, 34-year-old Kevin Laporte. CCSO Lt. Jeff Lickei said Monday morning that LifeNet transported Kevin Laporte to Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition. He is a Bellevue resident and was a passenger in Travis Laporte’s vehicle. Plattsmouth Rescue transported Travis Laporte to Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition.
Lickei said investigators have not yet determined the cause of the accident. He said the highway was wet Sunday morning as the result of snow that had fallen during the overnight hours. There was also new blacktop on the stretch of road where the accident took place, which may have made the road conditions slicker.
Nebraska State Patrol troopers have conducted an initial accident reconstruction investigation. Rescue crews were on scene for two hours.
Funeral services for Miner will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at First Presbyterian Church in Plattsmouth. Visitation will take place from 1-9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, at Roby Funeral Home in Plattsmouth. Family will be present from 6-8 p.m. Services for Robertson were not announced by The Journal's press time.
