Alan “Al” Thomas Wiles, age 78, of Plattsmouth passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2018, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.

He was born on Jan. 1, 1940, to Chester Linville and Emma Lucile (Albert) Wiles in Omaha. Alan was raised on his family’s farm and he attended school in Plattsmouth. He graduated from Plattsmouth High School with the class of 1957. After graduating high school, he attended Huron College in Huron, South Dakota, on a football scholarship. Alan met his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Jean Annette Marler, and they were later married on Aug. 21, 1960, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Plattsmouth. Alan and Jean made their home and raised their children in Plattsmouth. He attended and graduated from Omaha University with a degree in mechanical engineering and he was certified in robotics. He worked as farmer for the majority of life, but he also worked at the Vicker’s Corporation in Omaha for 38 years.

Alan was a lifelong member of Liberty United Methodist Church in Mynard and had served on various offices in the church. Al was also a member of P.A.C.K., Optimist Club, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Plattsmouth Rotary, Plattsmouth Band Parents, P.T.A., Nebraska Tractor’s Association, and Toastmasters Club. Alan served on the Plattsmouth School Board for 16 years, serving as president for four years. Alan was very active in the community with Cub Scouts, Webelos, Boy Scouts, baseball, football, and numerous other organizations.

He was a diehard Husker fan attending countless home games and away games. He was also a member of the Husker Touchdown Club, Home Run Club, Rebounders Club, University of Nebraska Foundation, and the Chancellors Club.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Wiles of Plattsmouth; three sons, Jeff Wiles and wife Vicki of Plattsmouth, Roger Wiles of Mynard, Craig Wiles and wife Kerry of Papillion; six grandchildren, Nicole Wiles, Natalie Wiles, Nolan Wiles, Mekhi Odjidja, Jennifer Colgrove, and Alec Wiles; three great-grandchildren, Josh, Julia, and Jolie Colgrove; two brothers-in-law, Don Freeburg of Plattsmouth, Larry Marler and wife Noveta of Omaha, Arkansas; three sisters-in-law, Charlotte Lawrence and husband Phil of Fisher, Ill., Claudia Lagerstrom and husband Bob of Olathe, Kansas, Billie Jo Gruber and husband George of Paola, Kansas; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Alan Chester Wiles; parents, Chester and Lucile Wiles; and his sister, Janice (Wiles) Freeburg.

Visitations will be held from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with family greeting relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, at Liberty United Methodist Church at 13114 Cook St., Plattsmouth (Mynard).

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at the Plattsmouth High School. Al’s family requests that you please wear your Husker attire (No Ties). Rev. Belinda Davidson will be officiating, Pam Osthus as vocalist, and Edith McCaw as pianist.

The Pallbearers will be Dr. Tad Freeburg, Tim Freeburg, Sam Hardy, Dennis Heim, Bob Dzuris, Randy Schroeder, and David Sharp.

The Honorary Pallbearers will be Don Freeburg, Kenny Dasher, Lenny Grauf, Duane Hobscheidt, Larry Lapel, Cecil McKnight, Carl Ofe, Carey Rohlfs, Don Schuler, Don Stuebe, and Steve Tandy.

His Final Resting Place will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Plattsmouth.

The family suggests memorials to Liberty United Methodist Church in Mynard or the Plattsmouth Education Association for the Jeff Wiles Leadership Fund.
