YUTAN – Cass County athletes made the most of prime track and field conditions Tuesday with their efforts at the Yutan Invite.
Students from four local schools traveled to Yutan on one of the top weather days of the spring. Girls and boys from Conestoga, Elmwood-Murdock, Louisville and Weeping Water competed in temperatures that reached the upper 60s.
The Conestoga girls placed third in team standings with 85 points. The Cougars medaled in 12 events and pocketed four championships. Reagan Ruffner headlined the day with titles in the 100, 200 and 400 meters. She also helped the 400-meter relay team finish fourth. Caylin Maier, Courtney Wagner and Autumn Hardesty joined her on the squad.
The 3,200 relay team of Hardesty, Wagner, Sophia Svanda and Bella Hogue added a gold medal for Conestoga. Ruffner, Maier, Hardesty and Hogue all ended the day with four medals, and Becca Simpson earned medals in the shot put and discus. Kayla Colgrove scored points for the Cougars in the high jump.
The Elmwood-Murdock girls captured eighth place in team standings with 21 points. Lauren Justesen helped the team with medals in the 400 and 800. Kylee Synovec and Chloe Hosier each added points for the Knights.
The Louisville girls collected fourth place in the team race with 47 points. The Lions captured medals in 12 events. Meagan Mackling finished second in both hurdles races and anchored a third-place 1,600 relay team. Faye Jacobsen, Avery Heard and Grace Jacobsen joined her on the relay. Maddy Sladky, Annika Covington, Bailey Houchin, Cadance Stenger, Erin Stohlmann, Sophie Korytowski, Joeie Gaebel and Maia Johnson added medals for Louisville.
The Conestoga boys earned fourth place in team standings with 60.50 points. Mason Jensen guided the Cougars with championships in the 100 and 200 meters. Jensen, Patrick Conner, Dillon Leffler and Ben Hansen soared to the title of the 400 relay, and Leffler placed third in the 800 meters. Justus Fisher and JeVon Lewis each added multiple medals for the team.
The Elmwood-Murdock boys collected sixth place in the team race with 46.50 points. Carter Bornemeier helped the Knights with a title in the 400 and a third-place medal in the 200. Massimo Lojing placed second in the 300 hurdles and led off a second-place 400-meter relay team. Drake Spohr, Gavyn Florell and Austin Meisinger joined Lojing on the squad. Andy Meyer, A.J. Hickey, Kyle Erixson, Zane Rikli, Austin Hawks, Noah Willey and Dylan Bruns added medals for Elmwood-Murdock.
The Louisville boys generated a fifth-place result with 58 points. Spencer Warner won the pole vault contest with a school-best mark of 12-6. He surpassed the former Louisville record of 12-0 set by Lanny Derby in 1990.
Hunter Klein earned a championship in the triple jump and added medals in the 200, 400 and 1,600 relay. Braydan Hlavac, Noah Shumaker and Jared Hrabik all scored points in the shot put, and Brady Geise, Jaden Maxey, Talon Ball and Doug Euans placed second in the 3,200 relay. Scott Blumer added a medal for the Lions.
The Weeping Water boys tied Yutan for eighth place with 20 points. Noah May led the Indians with a pair of second-place medals in the 800 and 1,600. May’s time of 2:03.81 in the 800 was the best in school history. He broke Javier Gomez’s former top mark of 2:04. Gomez had held the previous record since 1985.
Michael Stackpole earned a pair of medals for Weeping Water. Levi Neumeister, Avery Heath and Ryan Smith all chipped in one medal apiece.
