EAGLE – Elmwood-Murdock golfers proved Tuesday that good things can happen in threes.

The Knights qualified for their third straight state tournament during action at the District C-1 Meet. Elmwood-Murdock posted a team score of 329 at Woodland Hills Golf Course. The Knights finished 17 strokes ahead of third-place finisher Milford on the leaderboard.

Elmwood-Murdock head coach Curt Backemeyer said the veteran Knights showed their poise throughout district competition. All five golfers had competed in multiple postseason rounds in previous years, which allowed them to remain unfazed by larger crowds at Tuesday’s meet.

“We’re happy to qualify for the state golf meet for the third consecutive year,” Backemeyer said. “Our previous experience helped us today as there are more spectators at the district meet than most meets, which can give it a more anxious feel.”

E-M’s lineup of Nick Langfeldt, Riley Backemeyer, Zach Rust, Nolan Langfeldt and Wes Dreamer battled Lincoln Christian for the team title throughout the day. LCHS had been Elmwood-Murdock’s top opponent at other meets this season and brought a veteran lineup to districts. LCHS posted multiple low scores on the back nine to finish with a championship total of 319.

“We gave Lincoln Christian a good run as we led them by seven strokes after nine holes but they excelled on the back nine,” Backemeyer said. “We still did put up a solid team score along with our three that also qualified individually. We hope to continue to benefit from our experience at state at the Kearney Country Club.”

Backemeyer, Nick Langfeldt and Rust all earned automatic state bids on an individual level. Backemeyer and Langfeldt each posted rounds of 78 and finished fourth and fifth. Rust tied for tenth place with an 86.

Nolan Langfeldt (87) and Dreamer (89) helped Elmwood-Murdock secure a team trip to Kearney. Milford grabbed the final team spot with a 346 and Johnson County Central was fourth with a 360.

The Knights will compete in the Class C State Tournament May 22-23. Action will begin at 9:30 a.m. both days. Golfers will play 18 holes on day one and will repeat the 18-hole setup on day two.
