OMAHA – Six Plattsmouth athletes filled their memory banks with a wealth of valuable experiences this weekend at the state wrestling tournament.

Brock Bashus, Zach Nielsen, Jayden Wooten, Drake Rader, Devin Pfeifer and Trevor Nielsen competed for Plattsmouth in the Class B State Tournament. Action took place Thursday, Friday and Saturday at CHI Health Center in Omaha.

Bashus finished his season 31-20 at 132 pounds. Aurora’s Trevor Kluck won their first-round match 5-1 and Central City’s Koby Brandenburg secured a victory in the consolation round. Kluck went on to place third at 132 pounds.

Zach Nielsen ended his campaign 30-16 at 145 pounds. Eventual state champion Devontae Gutierrez of Scottsbluff earned a victory over Nielsen in the first round. Nielsen ended his season against O’Neill’s Tanner Storjohann in the consolation round.

Wooten, Rader, Pfeifer and Trevor Nielsen all earned medals with their efforts. Wooten placed fifth at 170 pounds, Rader finished fourth at 195, Pfeifer placed second at 220 and Nielsen was fifth at 285 pounds.

Wooten ended his campaign 39-14. He started his state tournament with a pin of Crete’s Nigel Bridger in 1:05. North Platte’s Gavyn Brauer edged him in the quarterfinals with a late pin, but Wooten rebounded with decisions over Columbus Lakeview’s Brook Behlen and Ogallala’s Brock Skinner.

Fairbury’s Ace York collected a 3-1 victory in the opening match Saturday morning. Wooten captured his fifth-place medal with a 2-0 decision over Zachary Serna of Norris.

Rader finished his season 32-15. He pinned Fairbury’s Domenic Hyson in the opening round and fell 4-2 in overtime to Dylan Meyer of Norris. Rader guaranteed himself a medal with a 15-5 victory over Seward’s Zach Ellington and a 5-2 triumph over York’s Brayan Rodriguez.

Rader dominated Adams Central’s Conner Brown 10-0 Saturday morning. Evan Morara edged Rader 5-3 in the third-place match.

Pfeifer ended his campaign 41-5. He bulldozed his way to the championship match with a pair of pins and one technical fall. He pinned Conestoga’s Hunter Thonen in 3:58 and took down York’s Douglas Lazo in 3:05. He then posted a 20-5 technical fall over Gabe Rand of Blair in the semifinals.

Schuyler’s Jesus Maganda won 5-3 in the championship match. Maganda went ahead 3-0 midway through the second period and led 3-1 at the start of the third period. He held off Pfeifer’s potential scoring moves to finish his season 38-0.

Trevor Nielsen wrapped up his campaign 36-9. He posted a quick pin of Schuyler’s Alejandro Sanabria before running into Waverly’s Trevor Brown in the quarterfinals. Brown captured a third-place medal in the tournament.

Nielsen rebounded with fast pins of Cody Thompson of Columbus Lakeview and Jade Wurth of Lexington. Cozad’s Josh Stallbaumer stopped Nielsen in the consolation semifinals Saturday morning. Nielsen then pinned Ralston’s David Hernandez in 22 seconds to capture fifth place.

Plattsmouth earned eighth place in the Class B team field with 67.5 points. Grand Island Northwest (96 points) held off Omaha Skutt (91) and Hastings (88.5) for the championship.
