CONESTOGA – Conestoga fans watched the Cougars compete on the basketball court Saturday afternoon during home games against Pawnee City.

Pawnee City 37, Conestoga girls 32

Pawnee City wrote the game’s headlines in the third quarter. The Indians sprinted ahead on the scoreboard with a 15-5 run in the period. PCHS (3-10) overcame a 16-14 halftime deficit to claim the victory.

Pawnee City used its height advantage to win the rebounding battle against Conestoga. The Indians grabbed 39 boards and hauled in 18 offensive rebounds. The Cougars finished the afternoon with eight offensive and 17 defensive rebounds.

Conestoga (1-10) made 16 steals against Pawnee City and forced 29 total turnovers. Myah Cummings led the defensive effort with five steals and Olivia Priefert and Hannah Vogler each made three steals. Taylor McClatchey, Lindee Watson, Sierra Dragoo, Maddy Schwindt and Mati Steckler all pocketed one steal.

Cummings led the Cougars with 14 points, four rebounds and one pass deflection. McClatchey produced five points and five rebounds and Watson generated five points and seven rebounds. Vogler ended the game with two points and four boards.

Dragoo had two points, one rebound and one pass deflection. Schwindt hauled in three rebounds and Priefert scored four points and had one rebound. Jennifer Sedlacek added defensive work for the team.

The Cougars will travel to Nebraska City tonight for a 6 p.m. matchup. The team will resume the campaign with a pair of home games this weekend. CHS will host Elmwood-Murdock at 6 p.m. Friday and Auburn at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Conestoga boys 72, Pawnee City 53

Conestoga used accurate 3-point shooting to jump past Pawnee City in the day’s second game. The Cougars went 13-of-25 from behind the arc. Lane Fox and Kobe Gansemer both drained four 3-pointers and Jaydon Fisher, Jax Madsen and Ben Welch all connected from long distance.

The Cougars (4-5) seized control of the game in the first half. The team jumped ahead of Pawnee City 22-13 after one period and embarked on a 23-14 run in the second quarter. Conestoga remained ahead of the Indians (2-9) with 30 points after the break.

Conestoga turned its defense into point-scoring opportunities. CHS made ten steals during the day and forced 22 turnovers. The Cougars scored 26 points off the Pawnee City giveaways.

Fox guided the team’s offense with 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting. He added seven assists, five steals, one rebound and two pass deflections. Gansemer pocketed 12 points, two steals, one assist and one rebound, and Koby Vogler finished with nine points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Madsen generated eight points, three assists, two rebounds, one steal and two pass deflections. Fisher scored six points and Lamoureux notched four points, four rebounds and two pass deflections. Welch chipped in three points, three assists and one rebound.

Grant Nickels helped the team with four points, two rebounds and one steal. Jacob Curtis tallied one rebound and Tobias Nolting and Wesley Nickels each saw court time in the contest.

Conestoga will journey to Nebraska City tonight for a 7:30 p.m. contest. The team will return home this weekend for a pair of games. CHS will host Elmwood-Murdock at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Auburn at 5:15 p.m. Saturday.
