Cougars, Lions collect NCC volleyball awards

2021 All-Nebraska Capitol Conference Volleyball Selections from Cass County

Four Cass County volleyball players have earned postseason recognition for their accomplishments on local courts this fall.

Conestoga senior Lindee Watson, Louisville seniors Lea Kalkowski and Jaylin Gaston and Louisville junior Sagan Leach received Nebraska Capitol Conference awards. All four students were named to the honorable mention team.

NCC volleyball coaches chose students for first, second and honorable mention teams during a recent selection meeting. They named seven players to the first team, seven players to the second team and 15 athletes to the honorable mention squad.

Volleyball players from Arlington, Ashland-Greenwood, Conestoga, DC West, Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, Louisville, Raymond Central, Syracuse and Yutan collected postseason honors.

Watson used her athleticism and leadership to fill multiple roles for Conestoga during the season. She posted team-best numbers in both kills (152) and serve receptions (469) and tied for first place in service aces (43). She chipped in 233 digs, 18 assists and ten total blocks (four solo, six assisted).

Watson finished 172-of-189 at the line for a .910 serving percentage. She pocketed aces in 18 of the team’s matches. She ended her four-year career with 623 digs, 406 kills, 117 aces and 1,208 serve receptions.

Kalkowski used her knowledge and experience to guide Louisville’s offense this season. She tallied 507 assists and handled 1,849 set attempts during the year. She added 233 digs, 23 kills and 13 total blocks (two solo, 11 assisted).

Kalkowski finished 335-of-350 at the line for a .957 serving percentage. She produced 30 aces and 128 service points for Louisville. Kalkowski finished her four-year career with 1,890 assists and 653 digs.

Gaston used her work ethic and leaping ability to lead Louisville at the net this fall. She posted a team-best 143 kills and registered kills on 25.8 percent of her swings. She delivered 20 total blocks (three solo, 17 assisted) and chipped in 56 digs, five assists and six serve receptions.

Gaston finished 185-of-222 at the service line. She generated 21 aces and 74 service points for the Lions.

Leach served as Louisville’s libero throughout the season. She used her defensive quickness to register 305 digs and 524 serve receptions in the back row. She added 47 assists and one kill for the team.

Leach finished 219-of-234 at the line for a serving percentage of .893. She posted 102 service points and 32 aces for the Lions.
