The Elmwood-Murdock girls created a winning weekend of basketball with their efforts in a 24-hour span Friday and Saturday.

Elmwood-Murdock 51, Palmyra 32

The Knights ensured a happy bus ride home from Palmyra by dominating the middle two quarters. E-M outscored the Panthers 16-9 in the second period and went on a 21-11 run in the third quarter. The squad finished the game with 20 baskets and seven free throws.

Lauren Justesen paced the team’s scoring attack with an efficient night of offense. She went 8-of-12 from the floor and 2-of-2 at the line during her 18-point evening.

Brenna Schmidt scored eight points, Sydney Anderson had six points and Jayden Halferty and Norina Higuchi each posted five points. Katelyn Vogler tallied three points, Paetyn Florell and Kylee Synovec each had two points and Bailey Frahm and Nicole Wenzel each scored one point.

Elmwood-Murdock 56, Johnson County Central 42

Seventh-seeded E-M outmuscled tenth-seeded JCC at home Saturday afternoon. The Knights hosted the Thunderbirds in the first round of the East Central Nebraska Conference Tournament.

Elmwood-Murdock built a 30-18 lead at halftime and withstood JCC’s comeback attempt after the break. The Knights outrebounded the Thunderbirds 30-19 in the game and grabbed eight offensive boards. E-M also sank 14 free throws.

Justesen helped the Knights with 21 points and seven rebounds. Anderson drained three treys and finished with 17 points and one rebound, and Schmidt anchored E-M’s interior game with six points and ten rebounds.

Wenzel finished with four points and two boards, Halferty had four points and one assist and Synovec tallied two points and two rebounds. Frahm had two points and one rebound, Florell grabbed four boards and Sydney Kunz came down with two rebounds.

Vogler ended the game with one rebound for E-M. Higuchi and Morgan Mills each provided defensive work for the team.

Elmwood-Murdock will travel to second-seeded Weeping Water tonight for the ECNC quarterfinals. Action is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Weeping Water Activities Center.
