The Elmwood-Murdock girls continued their basketball season this weekend with games against Johnson County Central and Oakland-Craig.

Elmwood-Murdock 65, Johnson County Central 32

Friday night’s home game against JCC turned into a tale of two halves. The Thunderbirds (3-8) stayed with the Knights during the opening 16 minutes. Elmwood-Murdock led by one point after the first quarter and the teams were tied 18-18 at the break.

The Knights stomped their foot on the scoring accelerator after that. E-M drove ahead on the scoreboard with a 20-11 run in the third quarter. The team then overwhelmed JCC in the final period. E-M outscored the Thunderbirds 27-3 in the last eight minutes.

Elmwood-Murdock outrebounded JCC 34-29 and grabbed 19 offensive boards. That allowed the team to produce 25 second-chance points.

Paetyn Florell posted 11 points and two rebounds and Sydney Anderson collected 11 points and one board. Lexi Bacon and Lauren Justesen had identical stat lines of nine points and six rebounds, and Kylee Synovec generated five points and two rebounds.

Brenna Schmidt collected four points and four boards, Jayden Halferty had four points and two rebounds and Katelyn Vogler poured in three points and five rebounds.

Sydney Kunz tallied three points and two rebounds, Nicole Wenzel had three points and one rebound and Morgan Mills scored three points. Norina Higuchi provided two points and one rebound and Bailey Frahm hauled in two rebounds.

Oakland-Craig 62, Elmwood-Murdock 38

The Knights squared off against second-ranked Oakland-Craig Saturday afternoon. OCHS improved to 12-0 and won by double digits for the ninth time.

Elmwood-Murdock (4-8) remained within striking distance in the first half. The team trailed 12-6 after one quarter and saw OCHS go up 27-19 at halftime. Oakland-Craig pulled away in the second half with 35 points. OCHS finished 22-of-48 from the floor and 14-of-21 at the foul line.

Anderson guided E-M’s scoring attack with nine points. Florell finished with six points and eight rebounds and Justesen posted seven points and four boards. Vogler pitched in five points and three rebounds.

Halferty generated five points and two rebounds and Synovec had two points and two rebounds. Frahm and Higuchi each scored two points and Kunz and Schmidt each grabbed two rebounds. Mills had one rebound and Wenzel provided defensive work for the team.

Elmwood-Murdock will resume its season tonight with a 6 p.m. game at Lincoln Lutheran. The team will travel to Conestoga on Friday for a 6 p.m. game with the Cougars.
