LOUISVILLE – Top-seeded Louisville wanted to prevent Mead from gaining any confidence in the first several minutes of Monday night’s tournament game.
The Lions achieved their goal by racing away from the Raiders in the opening quarter.
The Louisville girls built an early 20-4 lead and went on to dominate MHS 58-25. LHS hosted eighth-seeded Mead in the quarterfinals of the East Central Nebraska Conference Tournament. The game came just three days after Louisville won a regular-season contest in Mead.
The Lions created a 29-12 gap at halftime and led 46-16 after three quarters. Fourteen girls appeared in the game for Louisville.
Meagan Mackling helped the Lions with 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and four pass deflections. Jordan Winkler pitched in 13 points, three steals, two assists and four pass deflections, and Faye Jacobsen collected 12 points, eight boards, three blocks, one assist and one steal.
Maia Johnson generated seven points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal. Avery Heard poured in four rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Olivia Zahn tallied two points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Lauryn Kalkowski had two points and one rebound, McKenzie Norris scored two points and Juliette Andrews posted four points, one rebound and one assist. Skyler Pollock made one rebound and one assist and Katie Kerans had one pass deflection. Lea Kalkowski, Jennifer Katz and Jaylin Gaston all saw court time in the game.
Louisville will battle fourth-seeded Malcolm in the conference semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Lions and Clippers will play at Southeast Community College in Lincoln. The winner will advance to the championship game at 6 p.m. Saturday at SECC-Lincoln. The third-place game will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at the same venue.
