OMAHA – Weeping Water ended a season full of commitment, hard work and unity with a point-scoring appearance at the state wrestling meet.
Five Indians competed in the Class D State Tournament at CHI Health Center in Omaha. Nolan Blevins, Cory Groleau, Jason Burch, Slater Mozena and Marcus Cave battled opponents from across Nebraska at the event. Action took place Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Blevins finished his campaign 32-12 at 126 pounds. He stopped North Central’s Zak Palmer in overtime in the first round and fell to Thayer Central’s Keegan Casey in the quarterfinals. Casey captured a fourth-place medal in the tournament.
Blevins bounced back with a pin of Winside’s Gabe Escalante in 3:52. Garrett Latimer of Southwest edged him 6-4 in the third round of consolations Friday night. Latimer claimed a sixth-place medal in the weight class.
Groleau ended his season 36-21 at 132 pounds. Damian Stewart of Thayer Central won a first-round match and Crawford’s Dennis Vogl claimed a victory in the consolation round. Stewart captured a sixth-place medal in the tournament.
Burch finished the year 35-18 at 152 pounds. Morrill’s Austin Garcia won a first-round contest and Thayer Central’s Jarod Hergott secured a consolation-round victory. Garcia ended the tournament with a third-place medal.
Mozena wrapped up his campaign 48-5. He pinned Mullen’s Kendal Neal in 27 seconds in the first round Thursday morning. Dylan Horejsi of Howells-Dodge won 7-4 in the quarterfinals. Horejsi netted a fourth-place medal in the tournament.
Mozena rebounded with a 10-5 triumph over Clearwater-Orchard’s Codey Snider. Mozena ended the season with a matchup against Brock Schnaecher of Elkhorn Valley. Schnaecher posted a sixth-place finish in the meet.
Cave ended the year 56-4. He produced a quick highlight in the first round by pinning Arapahoe’s Levi Kerner in five seconds. He pinned Hitchcock County’s Gage Petersen in 2:15 in the quarterfinals before meeting previously-undefeated Jakob Jerabek of Arcadia/Loup City. Cave pinned Jerabek in 2:28.
Cave went toe to toe with Overton’s Kien Martin during Saturday’s championship match. The two wrestlers ended regulation tied at 4-4. Martin posted a takedown late in the overtime period to win.
Weeping Water ended the Class D team race in 18th place with 34 points. Plainview secured the championship with 127 points.
