PALMYRA – Weeping Water athletes enjoyed a king-sized reward for their work Friday after a royal performance on league wrestling mats.

The Indians claimed the East Central Nebraska Conference Tournament crown with 148 points. Weeping Water outdistanced runner-up Conestoga by 28 points for the championship. The squad had nine medalists in the 15-team tournament.

The event featured nine ECNC schools and six non-conference programs. League officials invited Tri County, Tekamah-Herman, East Butler, Palmer, Southern and Friend to the tournament to create more matchups for students.

Raphael Kirchmayr (152 pounds) and Marcus Cave (285 pounds) both created first-place highlights for Weeping Water. Kirchmayr improved to 32-11 with four pins in the tournament. Cave upped his season mark to 49-3 with an identical four-pin performance.

Cody Timbs (138), Jason Burch (152), Slater Mozena (182) and Trenton Baier (220) all earned second place for the Indians. Timbs improved to 13-3, Burch moved to 31-14, Mozena elevated his mark to 45-2 and Baier improved to 18-11.

Nolan Blevins (126) captured third place and Cory Groleau (132) and Kole Brack (170) both finished in fourth place. Blevins (27-9), Groleau (33-18) and Brack (21-25) all posted points for the Indians at the tournament.

Weeping Water will resume its season Feb. 8-9 at the District D-1 Tournament. The Indians will travel to Neligh-Oakdale for the 21-team event. Action is slated to begin at 3 p.m. Feb. 8 and 10 a.m. Feb. 9.

Ainsworth, Burwell, Central Valley, Clearwater-Orchard, Elgin Public/Pope John, Elkhorn Valley, Elwood, Franklin, Fullerton, Guardian Angels Central Catholic, Harvard, Lutheran High Northeast, Neligh-Oakdale, Niobrara/Verdigre, Osmond, Pleasanton, Riverside, Twin Loup, Weeping Water, West Holt and Wisner-Pilger are scheduled to compete in the tournament.
