NELIGH – Weeping Water wrestlers turned a trek to northeast Nebraska into a successful district journey this weekend.

The Indians captured fifth place in the District D-1 Meet at Neligh-Oakdale. The 21-team event featured many of the best squads in Class D. Burwell and Elkhorn Valley highlighted the list of opponents. Burwell finished first and Elkhorn Valley was second in last year’s Class D State Meet.

Nolan Blevins (126 pounds), Cory Groleau (132), Jason Burch (152), Slater Mozena (182) and Marcus Cave (285) all became state qualifiers for Weeping Water. District wrestlers had to finish in the top four spots of their weight brackets to collect state tickets.

Cave won the 285-pound district title and improved to 53-3. He defeated West Holt’s Jade Buss 5-2 in the championship match.

Blevins improved to 30-10 with a second-place run at districts. He collected one pin, one technical fall and one decision at the tournament. Mozena (46-3) captured third place and Groleau (36-19) and Burch (35-16) each earned fourth place.
