The January meeting of the Fremont Area Association of Retired School Personnel was held at Calvary Methodist Church and was called together by president Ruth Register.
Members began the meeting by packing bags of candy and making Valentine's Day cards for veterans in Fremont area care facilities. A potluck lunch was enjoyed by all.
The group celebrated all of its members’ birthdays at their January meeting. Members enjoyed cake and ice cream. Special birthday wishes were sent out to honorary members Lillian Schultz and Vlasta Kavan who turned and will turn 102, respectively, this year.
Dan Kauble, a long-term care ombudsman from Fremont, explained his job in Fremont. Rhoda Holstein won split the pot and donated her part back to the scholarship fund. Holstein also did the Remembering a Time in the Past story. Thank you notes were read from schools and veterans as to the treats given to them.
Association coordinators updated the membership on work being done or completed. Old business included the finalization of the veteran Christmas bag program, checking on treats going to area schools during the year and that three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this year.
New business included information given to members concerning the Nebraska Extension having a workshop seeking potential master gardeners and the Noon Kiwanis with their project of the Splash Station Park Playground Project. The Christmas bag program and Valentine's Day candy/card for veterans will continue next year. A community service member award will be set up and awarded at the July meeting.
The next meeting is scheduled for noon March 13 at the Main Street Education Building. The donation item for the meeting will be toilet paper. The program will be music from the Fremont Public Schools. Meeting adjourned.
