Gene J. Verbeek, 86, of Fremont died Thursday, July 5, 2018, after a long battle with dementia. Gene passed while living with their daughter, Vicki, and husband, John Wright, of Folsom, California.

Gene was born Oct. 17, 1931, in Scribner to John and Hazel Verbeek. He was raised in Fremont and graduated from Fremont High School. He served our country through the Army in 1949-1952, serving in the Korean War, earning a Korean Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion. He was married May 16, 1953, to Lois Ann Wilcox of Fremont. He worked as a baker at Olson’s Bakery in Fremont and Western Electric, then moved to California in 1960. Gene retired from Nobur Manufacturing after 40 years as a machinist and supervisor in 1988. Gene and wife, Lois Ann, moved to the Fremont area in 1989.

Gene loved to deep sea fish. He was president of a deep-sea fishing club, and raced stock cars in Saugus, California. He enjoyed working in his garage on his old cars.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hazel Verbeek; two brothers, Lyle and Jack; and sister, Joyce (Norby) Verbeek. Survivors include: his loving wife, Lois; daughters, Vick Wright and husband John of Folsom, California, Penny (Harrison) Verbeek and husband Gary of Palmdale, California; and son, Gene John and wife Linda of Center, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Christopher Verbeek of Ames, John Jr. Wright of Felton, California, Justin Wright of Folsom, and Joel Wright of Placerville, California; two great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth (Hoeneman) Verbeek of Florida; brothers, Gerald, Donald and wife Marlyn, Dana and wife Nancy, all of Fremont, Dennis and wife Carol of Scribner, Larry and wife Jo of Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in Fremont at a later date to be announced.
