Mary Ellen Mahlberg, 87 years, of Fremont passed away, Friday, Jan. 25, 2019, at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont. She was born Aug. 30, 1931, in rural Uehling to John and Mary (Geiser) Thiele.
Mary grew up in Uehling, graduated from West Point Guardian Angels High School, and resided in Hooper for some time. She moved to Fremont in 1949. She married Gerald “Jerry” Mahlberg on Aug. 30, 1950, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hooper. Jerry preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 2016. Mary was the school secretary for Archbishop Bergan High School, retiring in 1999.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, St. Patrick Women, Bergan High School Booster Club, and kept the records for Calvary Cemetery from 1960 to 2013. Mary was the first recipient of the Bergan Knights of the Round Table Award.
Mary is survived by daughters, Kathleen Belsky of Fremont, Patricia (Michael) Friesz of Alliance, Cynthia (Scott) Nielsen of Valley, Mary (Mick) Jacobs of Fremont, Teresa (Rodney) Devine of Fremont; son-in-law, Brian Farley of Colorado Springs, Colorado; sister, JoAnn Wilde of Hopewell, Virginia; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Jodi Farley; grandson, Tony Belsky; and brother, James Thiele.
The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fremont. Visitation with family receiving friends is Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont.
