This last week, October 21-27, was the National Friends of the Libraries Week. According to the United for Libraries website, this week is used to celebrate the many wonderful things our local friends group does for library services, programming, and events.
To celebrate the great things that the Friends of Keene Memorial Library group does for our library, we have put together a display with a giant greeting card to say “thank you”. We asked community members and staff members to sign the card. On Monday, November 5th, the card will be presented to the Friends of Keene Memorial Library at their monthly meeting at 6 p.m. in the library auditorium.
The card is our way of saying thank you for the thousands of dollars they spend each year to support all the library’s programs, services, and events. Some of the ways in which they supported the library were providing snacks & drinks, paying for author visits, funding half the Summer Reading Program Big Monday events, providing for Scholastic books for Summer Reading Program prizes, providing gifts and grand prize items for our contests and giveaway events, providing funding for the Prime Time Reading Program, and funding special events. Our Friends group also serves as a local 501C3 that can receive grant funds and this year, they received $45,000 in private grant monies to be used to help educate the community about Dyslexia and the Inspirational Tree Lighting to be held November 15th at 6 p.m.
If you are one of the folks buying books at Dave’s liquor or someone that attends the annual book sale every year, you probably know that the Friends of Keene Memorial Library provides the manpower behind these book sales. Many do not know the number of hours and the amount of labor that is put into sorting books and prepping them for sale. It’s tremendous! So if you see someone that serves in our Friends of the Library group, please tell them “thank you” for all the hard work they do each and every year to support the library and the community of Fremont.
