As some of you may know, the library online presence sits in a software called SirsiDynix/Horizon. This is the software we use for all of the library records, data, website, and catalog. We recently renegotiated the contract with SirsiDynix and as a result, saved hundreds of thousands of dollars and have been able to add some additional modules and new features that we would not have been able to afford otherwise. We were able to add a new version of the catalog called Enterprise and within Enterprise, added a children’s module.

The jargon and technical details are too complicated, so to help everyone understand what is coming, it is easiest to just say a new version of the online catalog will be available alongside the old version. Kelly Olson, our IT Specialist has spent several months building the new platform. We have test driven the beta version and staff has spent months reviewing and testing the platform. In the coming month, Kelly will be adding the new version to exist on our website, so patrons can still use the old version, but can also start learning the new version and seeing the great features this upgrade has to offer. Eventually, sometime down the road, we will be moving solely to the new platform. We encourage patrons to test out the new version and start learning how to search for materials in the new Enterprise online catalog.

The biggest benefits to moving to Enterprise and adding the children’s module are:

1. Better patron access and ease of use

2. More search functionality

3. More dynamic searching

4. Able to search electronic resources and print at the same time

5. Bringing the electronic resources into Enterprise – don’t have to separately go into databases

6. Able to download Overdrive books directly from the catalog (don’t have to go into Overdrive)

7. Adding a separate children’s platform to help with searching for materials and resources – kids will have their own catalog page

This project was started in late 2016 with contract negotiations and the final steps of adding Enterprise are finally coming to fruition. Staff has spent many hours test driving the new version and making sure functionality is on target and patrons will be able to find what they need. We greatly hope that parents and children will enjoy the separate children’s platform and that finding materials for children will be easier and more intuitive than the old catalog version.

We do of course hope to receive feedback from patrons and community. Our goal is to make sure everyone is heard, and we will use the feedback to improve our resources and functionality. Patron feedback is the best form of flattery. It means that you are interested in our services and we want to make sure we are doing everything possible to make all your experiences with Keene Memorial Library top notch!

Tina Walker is Director of Keene Memorial Library in Fremont.
