WAHOO — Fremont Bergan used a familiar formula to pass its first D1-1 girls subdistrict tournament test on Wednesday night.
The Lady Knights’ defense led to points in transition as the Lady Knights defeated Cedar Bluffs 63-17 at Wahoo High School.
The Lady Knights scored the first 16 points of the game and led 27-5 after one quarter.
“Our girls are built to run,” Bergan coach Nate Pribnow said. “We tell them that in practice. They are long and athletic. They can get up and down the floor and that was the story of the game early on. We were able to run the floor and get layups in transition.”
Haley Kempf’s basket with 5:20 left in the second period put the Lady Knights up 36-5. They enjoyed a 49-10 lead at halftime.
Kaia McIntyre scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the first half.
“She was really feeling it early on and that was good to see,” Pribnow said. “She also played well against Oakland-Craig (an overtime loss on Feb. 5). Hopefully that gives her a confidence boost and carries over to our next game.”
Senior guard Allison Dieckmann added 14 points. Kempf finished with 10 while Lauren Baker and Allie DeGroff contributed eight apiece.
“Our girls played hard and we got everyone into the game,” Pribnow said. “Hopefully this helps us moving forward.”
Alyssa Classen led the Wildcats, who end their season with a 10-12 record, with six points. Jadyn Vacha and Skyler Shanahan had five apiece.
The Wildcats advance to the semifinals by defeating Cornerstone Christian 56-29 on Tuesday night. Classen led the way with 18 points. Megan Schollmeyer added 12 while Vacha had 10. Shanahan (nine) and Neveah Patyk (seven) also scored points.
Bergan, 14-8, advances to the championship game at 7 Thursday night against either second-seeded Weeping Water or third-seeded Omaha Christian Academy.
