Dre Vance

Dre Vance of Fremont Bergan competes during the Joe Wojtkiewicz Cross Country Invitational last month. Vance finished third on Thursday in the D-2 district meet at Walnut Grove Park.

OMAHA — Fremont Bergan qualified a pair of athletes Thursday for next week’s state cross country meet at Kearney.

During D-2 district competition at Walnut Grove Park, Dre Vance qualified for the Bergan boys while Jadin Ostrand earned a berth for the Lady Knights.

“Days like today are what makes sports so much fun,” Bergan coach Wyatt Morse said. “We got to experience the thrill of victory with Dre and Jadin qualifying for the state meet and the agony of defeat with Emma (Larson) comping up a second short of making it.”

The top three teams and top 15 individuals qualified. Larson was 16th in 23:24.10 while Ashley Ternus grabbed the last qualifying spot in 15th at 23:23.33. Ostand was 13th in 23:08.66.

“What a race the girls ran today,” Morse said. “I’m very proud of what they both have accomplished this past few weeks. I’m looking forward to seeing Jadin compete at the state meet. She is only the ninth Lady Knight to qualify for state as an individual.”

Vance was third in the boys’ division in 18:06.33.

“Dre has had a goal all year to get back to Kearney,” Morse said. “As the meets started to mean more, his level of desire and focus increased. Today he had a plan and followed it leading to his third-place finish.”

Vance’s performance was the best for a Bergan runner at districts since John Villwok was the runner-up in 1986, Morse said.

Ben Simonson of the Knights was 41st in 20:31.28. Teammate Brenton Pitt placed 48th in 21:10.61. Nathan Fuchs was 62nd in 22:07.29. Spencer Hamilton was 66th 22:55.54.

Logan View won the girls’ team championship with 39 points. Junior Elizabeth Polk (20:59.78) was the individual runner-up to Paige Steinman of Pender (19:44.45).

Freshman Maelee Beacom of the Raiders finished sixth in 22:09.21. Melody Kibby (23:55.75) was 18th, Brooklyn Reynolds finished 21st (24:40.07) and Reagan Weidemann (26:44.78) was 29th. Katleyn Smith (33:32.42) also competed for Logan View.

Samantha Linder of Oakland-Craig finished fifth in 21:52.17.

Cornerstone Christian won the boys’ division with 55 points while Wisner-Pilger was second with 62. Logan View also qualified by placing third with 66.

Luis Hernandez-Jimenez paced the Raiders by finishing ninth in 18:31.99. Junior Wyatt Rebbe was 11th in 18:36.20.

Freshman Kayl Francis (19:24.15) was 24th and Beau Kaup (19:35,72) was 26th. Lane Hartung placed 49th (21:13.60) and Martin Valencia was 55th (21:26.25) for the Raiders.

Yutan qualified two athletes for state. Sophomore Brady Timm was seventh in 18:26.53 and freshman Isaac Kult placed 14th in 18:38.19.

The Class D girls race will be at noon Friday at the Kearney Country Club while the Class D boys will compete at 1.
