OMAHA — Fremont High School’s No. 1 doubles team of Alex Bigsby and Austin Callahan finished fourth on Thursday in the Class A state tennis meet.
After getting a bye and winning two matches Wednesday, the Tigers fell 6-4, 6-4 to
top-seeded Samuel Faulk and Garret Starman of Millard North. Faulk and Starman went on to win the championship.
In the third-place match, Nick O’Shea and Grady Works of Lincoln Southwest edged Callahan and Bigsby 6-4, 6-4.
“Alex and Austin knew that nothing was going to come easy today, but they were definitely up to the challenge,” Fremont coach Justin Bigsby said. “They got off to a great start against Millard North, but (Faulk and Starman) really picked up their game as the match went on and we just didn’t get quite enough breaks to go our way.”
Coach Bigsby said the duo didn’t sulk after losing a hard-fought match. They competed hard against Southwest.
“Southwest is a very good team, one that was just a little better than us this afternoon,” he said. “The match really seemed to come down to
just a few points here or there and those points just didn’t go our way. I’m so proud of all of our guys for the season they put together.”
Millard North won the team title with 48.25 points. Lincoln East was the runner-up with 35.5 while Lincoln Southeast was third with 35.
The Tigers finished ninth with 20.
“Finishing ninth at state is definitely a step in the right direction for our program,” Bigsby said. “We’re losing some great seniors this year, but we’re going to look to build off of what they did and see if we can continue to get better.”
