LINCOLN — Emma Walz recorded a pair of top-four individual finishes and Lauren Gifford set two school records to lead Fremont High at the Heartland Athletic Conference Swim Meet.
The Fremont girls finished seventh with 113 points while Lincoln Southwest won the title with 579. Lincoln East was the runner-up with 538.
Walz finished third in the 100 freestyle in 54.89 and was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 25.33.
Gifford set a school record in the 100 breaststroke during Friday’s preliminaries in 1.11.11. The old record, set in 1976, was 1:12.68. She finished sixth in the finals Saturday in 1:11.70.
“Lauren has had her eye on their record for the past three years and it was time for it to go down,” Fremont coach Ali Granger said.
Gifford also placed sixth in the 200 IM with a school record time of 2:17.45.
“Lauren set the school record last year at the HAC meet,” Granger said. “Then at the Columbus dual, Emma broke it by .01 seconds. Today, Lauren broke that mark by .10 seconds.”
The 200 medley relay of Walz, Gifford, Jacie Pelikan and Lolly Barnes placed sixth in 2:05.72. The 200 freestyle relay of Gifford, Kylie Schurz, Pelikan and Walz was sixth in 1:49.70.
Pelikan also placed 13th in the 500 freestyle in 6:24.79.
The Fremont boys finished sixth in the team standings with 176 points. East won the championship with 469 while Lincoln Southwest was second with 435.
Colton Juhl led the Tigers with a third-pace finish in the 100 freestyle in 50.62. He lowered his state secondary cut from the preliminaries.
Teammate Mack Prince was eighth in 52.68.
JJ Pelikan earned a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.52. Teammate Jack Norris was 16th in 1:15.22. Pelikan also finished eighth in the 100 fly in 59.36.
In the 500 freestyle, Dylan Bobbett won the consolation finals for ninth place in 5:19.56. Teammate Grant Westerman was 12th in 5:37.29.
Prince was eighth in the 100 backstroke in 59.67 while Westerman was 16th in 2:09.22 of the 200 freestyle.
Juhl, AJ Jacobus, Prince and Pelikan were fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:34.62. Westerman, Bobbett, Jacobus and Jack Norris were seventh in the 400 freestyle in 3:51.12.
Granger said the Tigers will now wait to see which secondary cuts make it to the state meet, scheduled for Feb. 22-24 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln.
